Abstract: Finding upper and lower bounds for the number k(G) of conjugacy classes of a finite group G is a fundamental problem in finite group theory. We will present various approaches to this problem in some important situations. For example, the k(GV)-problem seeks strong upper bounds for the semidirect product of a group G and a finite G-module V. Also, there is some interesting work on lower bounds for k(G) in terms of |G|. We will survey some important results in this field and also discuss some open problems which come up along the way and which we think are worthy of further study.
